Student Health Services

A variety of health services are available to assist students in achieving and maintaining optimal health for physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. For detailed information, visit the Health Services website.

School nurses
Each school has a school nurse who provides medical screenings, primary treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, dispenses medication administered to students during school hours, and consults with parents regarding health concerns.

Medications
All prescription and over-the-counter medications must be registered by the parent with the school nurse, main office, teacher, or administrator. Medication may not be transported on the school bus. See page 66 in the
Parent/Student Handbook for more information.

Immunization Requirements
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control regulates school immunization requirements. For information about exemptions to these requirements, see the school nurse. A complete list of immunization requirements for school attendance are available on page 9 in the
Parent/Student Handbook.

School exclusion list
To protect well children from unnecessary exposure to contagious or infectious diseases, parents must notify the school within 24 hours after their child has developed a known or suspected communicable disease. Students may return to school as soon as their symptoms are resolved, unless stated otherwise by their doctor or the school and childcare exclusion lists (see pages 82-83 in the
Parent/Student Handbook).

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act protects medical records and other health information provided by health plans, doctors, hospitals, and other health-care providers.

Individual Health Plans (IHPs)

Individual Health Plans (IHPs) are written for studentswho have special health care needs that must be met by school staff during the school day. Along with parents and medical providers, school nurses who are registered
nurses write IHPs to guide how a student's health care needs will be met while at school. IHPs are also written for students who are approved to self-medicate or selfmonitor.

To learn more about IHPs, talk with the school nurse.

Medical Homebound Instruction

Medical homebound instruction may be provided for students who cannot attend school because of a medical illness or injury. A physician must complete a medical homebound form to certify the need for homebound
services. If the school district determines that the student qualifies for homebound services, a teacher or teachers will go to the student's home to provide instruction and facilitate school assignments until the student is able to return to school.
