Each
January, school board members throughout South Carolina are celebrated
for their service to schools and communities during School Board
Recognition Month. As the leading voices for public schools, board
members develop policies and make tough decisions on complex
educational, financial, and social issues impacting the entire
community. Locally, the Horry County Board of Education provides the
governing leadership for the state’s third largest school district of
more than 37,000 students, the county’s largest employer of more than
5,000 employees, and an annual budget of nearly $500 million.
The
men and women serving the Horry County Board of Education are Will
Garland, Chairman; Dr. Paul Peterson, Vice-Chairman, District 5; Ronald
Bessant, District 9; Joe DeFeo, District 3; Harvey Eisner, District 1;
Bill Graham, District 8; MaryEllen Greene, District 2; Charles Hucks,
District 11; Paul Hudson, District 7; Kay Loftus, District 4; Chris
Shannon, District 10 and Pam Timms, District 6.
Board members MaryEllen Greene and Pam Timms
were recently honored by the South Carolina School Boards Association
for having served 10 years on the Horry County Board of Education. They
were among 40 other school board members throughout the state to be
recognized for 10 or 15 years of service. Among the state’s 632 school
board members, only 30 percent have served 10 years or more. Both
Greene and Timms were presented with a certificate and a lapel pin.
