(posted on July 26, 2009)

The South Carolina Department of Education announced the recipients of more than $3 million to support programs aimed at helping potential high school dropouts. The awards include innovation grants ranging from $25,000 to nearly $250,000 for programs that help at-risk students graduate from high school, plus supplemental grants of $6,000 each to sustain existing efforts at 60 schools across the state. Schools have an opportunity to apply for the grants each spring.

Among the 60 South Carolina schools earning supplemental grants of $6,000 were nine Horry County Schools’ secondary schools. Eight schools will utilize funding to help fund a part-time graduation coach to help students meet goals for high school graduation. Recipient schools are Aynor High School; the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology; the Academy for Technology and Academics; Green Sea Floyds High School; Loris High School; North Myrtle Beach High School; St. James High School; and Socastee High School. In addition, the Horry County Early College High School was awarded $6,000 to be used to fund an academic coach and to buy mini-computers.
