Ten schools to add golf to physical education curriculum with First Tee

(posted on August 27, 2009)

Horry County Schools’ elementary students in ten schools will get lessons in golf and core values as First Tee becomes a part of the physical education curriculum. The school program introduces golf to students in a safe and fun manner, while promoting personal character development in every lesson. First Tee teaches students the fundamentals of golf along with The First Tee Nine Core Values of confidence, respect, judgment, responsibility, sportsmanship, courtesy, honesty, integrity, and perseverance.

Each school in the program received training from The First Tee national office with ongoing support provided through online resources. Physical education teachers may deliver the curriculum indoors or outdoors using specially designed plastic golf clubs, tennis-style balls, and a variety of Velcro targets. The program is being funded by The First Tee of Myrtle Beach and The First Tee national organization at a cost of $2800 per school.

The ten elementary schools participating in the program are: Burgess Elementary School, Green Sea Floyds Elementary School, Lakewood Elementary School, Myrtle Beach Intermediate School, North Myrtle Beach Elementary School, North Myrtle Beach Primary School, Daisy Elementary School, South Conway Elementary School, St. James Elementary School, and Socastee Elementary School.
