Academy students showcase at Inaugural Grand Strand TechEXPO

Horry County Schools’ students attending the Academy for Arts, Science, and Technology and the Academy for Technology and Academics will be among the exhibitors for the inaugural Grand Strand TechEXPO hosted by the Grand Strand Technology Council. The one-day event will be held on February 11 at the Crown Reef Resort Ballroom from noon until 7 p.m. The TechEXPO is free and open to the public.

Academy for Arts, Science and Technology students and staff will showcase projects and technology applications in the pre-engineering, environmental science, entertainment technology, interactive media, and pre-med career majors. Guests can learn about the students’ robotics projects, see how the school’s news program is put together, and see examples of graphic designs.  Pre-med students will demonstrate Cyber Surgeon. Students in the Connect program will demonstrate the technology of the DEPCO lab, as well as digital photography.

Students and staff from the Academy for Technology and Academics will demonstrate technology applications in business, digital arts and design, and engineering and design career majors.  A number of software packages will be demonstrated including Autodesk Design Academy 2010, Adobe Creative Suites 4, Chief Architect, Alice, and SAS Programming. There will also be an electric go cart on display that was designed and built by the Project Lead The Way class.

While academy students will be among the exhibitors at the TechEXPO, students from each District school will be involved in a county-wide exhibition of technology planned for April 29. The Grand Strand Technology Council has donated seed money to HCS for the student expo and is partnering with the district to showcase the technology being used in 21st century classrooms.

Government and education exhibitors include: Horry County Schools, Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation; Horry-Georgetown Technical College; College of Natural and Applied Sciences of Coastal Carolina University; Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies; and Horry County Government.

The Grand Strand Technology Council is a membership organization representing more than 35 companies and individual professionals in Horry and Georgetown counties.
