Nathan West, St. James High School art student, won a Gold Key Award in the Scholastic Art Awards South Carolina 2009 competition, for his transparent watercolor painting entitled Vegetables. A Gold Key is awarded to students whose artwork demonstrates the highest level of originality, technique and personal vision. West’s second submission, a mixed media piece entitled Out of the Woods, was also accepted into the Regional Show which will run from January 12 - February 13 at the Cultural Center at Lander University.

The competition is held annually at Lander University and is open to all middle and high school students. This year 160 works were chosen from schools around the state for the regional exhibition. The awards included 22 Gold Keys, 32 Silver Keys, along with four American Vision Medal nominees. Gold Key and American Vision nominees will represent South Carolina in New York City at the National Competition. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2009 is the nation's longest-running, largest, and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts.

Nathan, 16, is an Art 3 student of Mrs. Sherry Strickland Martin.
