SAT scores rise four points

The College Board released results of the SAT for 2008 today, revealing a four-point gain in Horry County Schools’ composite of critical reading and math scores.

Horry County Schools’ composite of scores for critical reading and math is 1005, which is 20 points above the state average of 985 and 12 points below the national average of 1017. Five district schools surpassed the national average, by as few as three and as many as 76 points. They are: Aynor High School (1093), Carolina Forest High School (1024), Green Sea Floyds High School (1062), Socastee High School (1020) and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology, (1023).

District-wide, 859 students, or 46 percent of the senior class, took the SAT. This represents a three-percent increase in participation over last year.

South Carolina ranks first in the nation among states where more than half of seniors take the SAT with a 34-point improvement over the last 10 years.  Statewide, more than 24,000, or 61 percent, of high school seniors took the SAT.

HCS seniors averaged 494 in critical reading and 510 in math tests. Statewide, seniors averaged 488 in critical reading and 497 in math tests. Nationally, seniors averaged 502 in critical reading and 515 in math tests.

In the third year of the writing test, the district average was 482, six points above the state average of 476 and 12 points below the national average of 494.

HCS high schools and their SAT composite scores on critical reading and math tests are as follows:

  • Academy for Arts, Science and Technology, 1023 in 2008, down five points from 1028 in 2007;
  • Aynor High School, 1093 in 2008, up 88 points from 1005 in 2007;
  • Carolina Forest High School, 1024 in 2008, down seven points from 1031 in 2007;
  • Conway High School, 975 in 2008, down 19 points from 994 in 2007;
  • Green Sea Floyds High School, 1062 in 2008, up 61 points from 1001 in 2007;
  • Loris High School, 977 in 2008, up 32 points from 945 in 2007;
  • Myrtle Beach High School, 994 in 2008, up three points from 991 in 2007;
  • North Myrtle Beach High School, 965 in 2008, down 28 points from 993 in 2007;
  • St. James High School, 988 in 2008, down 16 points from 1004 in 2007; and
  • Socastee High School, 1020 in 2008, up 19 points from 1001 in 2007.

HCS seniors averaged 494 in critical reading and 510 in math tests. The composite of 1005 is reflective of rounded numbers and is not a mathematical error.
