If you are interested in pursuing National Board Certification for the first time, please read this page thoroughly and follow all of the steps described.
(Updated September 2011)
The National Board Certification (NBC) process is a complex one and there are numerous details, deadlines, and requirements of which you should be aware. If you are interested in pursuing the NBC process, you will need to read carefully through the important instructions and information below. Next, you will need to participate in the National Board Certification Awareness Voice Thread (online meeting) linked below on this page. This online meeting will provide important information that could save you time and money, and it should help answer many questions you may have about the NBC process.
You may already know a bit about the NBC process, but there have been some major changes in the past year, as described below:
- Our elected legislators in South Carolina have made some major changes to funding for the National Board Certification (NBC) application fee and supplements for National Board Certified Teachers.
- There is no longer a loan in South Carolina to cover the $2,500 fee to apply for NBC.
- There are a limited number of $750 Friends of South Carolina Scholarships and $1,250 Federal Subsidies to offset the $2,500 fee to apply for National Board Certification.
- Educators wishing to apply for NBC will now pay out-of-pocket costs of $565. Educators who do not achieve in their first or second year will pay additional fees to re-submit portfolios or retake computerized assessments.
- Educators submitting their NBC application for the first time this fall will earn a $5,000 annual salary supplement from the state of South Carolina, should they achieve NBC. This supplement is good for the 10-year life of their certificate, and is not renewable, should the educator renew their NBC after 10 years.
- The state of South Carolina legislators vote each year whether or not to pay an annual salary supplement to NBCTs for the 10-year life of their certificate.
