SURFSIDE
Smoking ban will aid business in the end In Surfside Beach you are not allowed to smoke in public places. Some restaurants think they will lose money because smokers will not want to come to their business. I think it could bring in more money, because more people who do not like the smell of smoke will enjoy going to a place that is smoke-free. I feel that if people have to have a cigarette while they eat, then they have a serious problem. I think this law will help tourism this summer. Tourists will enjoy going to the beach more because there will not be cigarettes all over the beach. Tourists who do not smoke will want to go to smoke-free restaurants. On the other hand, there will be people who will not like the law. There will always be people who will smoke in public places; hopefully it will be less than it used to be. Elaina Prevatte Murrells Inlet AFFORDABILITY Gas prices hit many aspects of economy Not everyone can afford $3.15 per gallon. People who are already struggling don't want the stress of gas prices on them too. High gas prices aren't just going to hurt people's pocket but also shipping prices of food and products and tourism. Tourists won't want to travel with gas prices so high, businesses will lose money and business and have to shut down. Gas prices are affecting food prices - it's costing more to transport food, so then businesses have to increase prices. People are losing money; it's not fair to the people who have to drive around for a living. We have to get the gas prices down. Whitney Young Myrtle Beach BEACHES Residents, tourists bad about littering To many people, Myrtle Beach is a beautiful safe haven, a vacation destination to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. But for the locals, tourist season is just another year of trash pickup and nasty beaches. When my uncle and I went for a walk on the beach with our dogs, we picked up two or three pieces of trash. Just what does it say about the locals when we litter along our own beaches? Careless littering isn't only harmful to our environment, but we have to organize beach cleanup teams to rid ourselves of it. Tourist season may be a money-maker, but what is it doing to our beaches? Stricter laws need to be enforced regarding littering on our beaches. We have to live here year round, so let's try our best to keep South Carolina clean and green. Kristina Lamonds Garden City Beach U.S. FIRST Illegal immigrants take work from teens For the past few years, illegal immigration has increased a lot. Due to the increase, Americans find it hard to find a job because immigrants have claimed most of them. My dad owns Whittington Paint Contracting, and there has been a decrease in the amount of work he does. My dad builds, paints and repairs houses. Most of this kind of work is given to many immigrants, which hurts my dad's business. But my dad is not the only one suffering. If we keep letting immigrants in, there could possibly not be any work available for teens who need to pay for cars, college, etc. America worries too much about immigrants. We need to help ourselves first. Sarah Whittington Myrtle Beach ST. JAMES Educate students on food choices Should students be forced to eat healthy? Should our schools decide this for us? St. James High School is one of the schools in our county that only offers low-calorie foods and drinks for students at break and lunch. Some examples of this would be wheat Pop Tarts, low-calorie chips and candy bars. I feel that this is not fair for the kids who do not want to eat bland-tasting foods. We should have a choice of what we want to eat and not just told that we have to eat healthy for the rest of our high school careers. Our school lunch menu and break time snacks should offer us healthy choices, but we should be able to decide what's best for us. Schools around here should be teaching students to make informed decisions. Sarah Perritt Myrtle Beach DIET School food limits unfair, unappealing I think that low-carb foods in our schools is wrong because the state should not push what the students should eat. At my school they don't even sell diet soda. All they sell is Coke Zero, Baked Lays and other things, which in my opinion is wrong. Some students probably go home and eat fatty things, so it's not like this new bill is working anyway, though I do see the obesity rate at our nation's schools. If the schools sell regular drinks and food, the students would probably be happier. James Dockter Myrtle Beach He and his team just earned the school $250. Keep Recycling

It will remain in our school until next year's contest. Check it out in the front office! Way to go Martine! I was honored and privileged to be invited to join the Veterans of our Grand Strand to Washington. With the efforts of St.James High School and the rest of the community, we were able to collect 24,000 for the veterans for their trip to their memorial. I can say that this trip was the experience of a life time. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time and I have our community, veterans, Mrs.Debock for starting the movement at St.James of helping these very deserving veterans and individuals such as Jack Platt and Lou Kreiger for being the determined incredible individuals that they are and making this happen. I believe our community has finally started to come together, young/new generations talking, appreciating and honoring the greatest generations. It's an emotional process I have gone through and a trip I will never forget. The men and women of World War II are some of the most astounding individuals I have and will ever meet and for that they will always be in my heart. There aren't enough words, medals or memorials to show the veterans our appreciation but after this trip they now know they haven't and will never be forgotten and more importantly they know our community looks up and supports them. From a new generation to the greatest generation, this trip has enabled me to open my eyes and has changed my life drastically for the better. Eleven students at St. James High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. Seven students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award: James Cox, Tiffany Fagnant, Alex Reynolds, James Sellers, Lindsay Smith, Lucas Snyder, and Grace Vahey. These students earned an average of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Adam Brunelle, Robert Harden, and Bailey Howard earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Bryan Huxhold qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. St. James is proud to announce our students who have achieved this outstanding award.
