The Principal's Point

Shirley H. Huggins

Since we did not meet AYP, Adequate Yearly Progress, for two consecutive years, we had to offer school choice this year.  By your choice, you left your children with us.  Our staff appreciates your confidence in our school and the quality of education your children are receiving.

Our focus again this year will be to make sure ALL students make adequate progress so we can meet the AYP requirements.  We failed to meet the AYP requirements with our disabled students in the areas of English Language Arts and Math.  The African-American sub-group did not reach the percentage scoring proficient in English Language Arts that was needed for AYP.  There will definitely be a lot of emphasis placed on these two groups of students to provide them with strategies to help them improve.

An academic plan is developed for any student being retained for the current year in grades 3—6, a student who scored Below Basic on any PACT test in grades 3—6, or any student who scored in the bottom quartile on a standardized test, such as MAP in grades 3—6.  How will we let you know which students are on an academic plan of improvement?  Those students will have a parent conference scheduled on October 12, where we will develop achievement goals for the 2006-07 Academic Plan.  These achievement goals will be reviewed each grading period to discuss the students’ progress.

There are strict promotion requirements for students on Academic Plans.  Your child’s teacher will discuss these guidelines with you during your scheduled conference on October 12.  Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend this important conference with your child.
