Burgess Elementary won recycling for the third time with our aluminum collection in March! We came in second in our division for the year just behind Kingston Elementary School.  We are so proud of this accomplishment! Don’t forget to keep recycling!  Burgess Raises  Over $10,000    For March of Dimes

Burgess Elementary students, teachers, and staff members more than doubled our March of Dimes goal of $5000 with a grand total of $10, 266 . The winning student was Gavin   Brown with $535. The winning teachers was Mrs. Jerri Coleman with $650. We were presented with a plaque at the district walk as the Top New Team! Check it out in our trophy case. Ms. Giampietro is having a walking club on Wednesday’s after school.  If you are interested and need permission slip please let me know!!  We will be starting on Wednesday April 2nd This month the children are testing for the Fitnessgram and learning dances for the May PTA meeting/performance.  Ask your child why we take the Fitnessgram (and if they get a report about what they did!).  This is perfect timing for them to begin getting in “condition” for the March of Dimes walk we are holding.

 Career Day:  Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students participated in Career Day on March 20th. The children had the opportunity to meet parents and community members representing over twenty different careers.

Young Writer’s Conference -- Congratulations to Essence Smith, one of our fourth grade students, who was selected to attend the South Carolina Young Writer’s Conference in Columbia. Essence is one of only five children in the district selected for this honor. Attendees have the opportunity to attend large group sessions featuring nationally recognized authors and illustrators and also attend small group sessions conducted by trained group leaders. Each student brings a completed piece of writing to the conference which will be  published in a Student Anthology.

            PTA UPDATE

Thank you for the huge turnout for our March PTA meeting and basket auction. We brought in $200 with the pizza dinner and $1246 with our 14 baskets. What a great accomplishment for our first auction! A big thank you to the parents, teachers and staff members who volunteered their time and talents to this endeavor. Also, congratulations to Mrs. Jerri Coleman and her students on their wonderful musical performance. Mark you calendars now for our final PTA meeting of the year on Monday, May 5th.

 

Spring Break

Friday, March 21st–28th

Burgess Elementary - Talkin' Trash Winners for January!   We have one more week of recycling for the Talkin’ Trash competition. We will be collecting aluminum and steel cans through  Thursday, March 13th.  So, help our school and our environment by sending in your aluminum and steel cans.  Keep recycling!     

Burgess Elementary School did a great job collecting plastics this February – we filled four dumpster containers full!       We have one more month of recycling for the Talkin’ Trash competition. We will be collecting aluminum and steel cans through  Thursday, March 13th.  So, help our school and our environment by sending in your aluminum and steel cans.  Keep recycling!      

 
 
  Family Fun Run Big Success

The Family Fun Run on Friday, February 15th, was a  great afternoon of fun for the whole family.  We had 125 Burgess Sea Turtles present to walk for our team. What a great turnout for our first year! Two dollars from each participant’s registration fee comes back to our physical education department. A big thank you and congratulations to Ms. Giampietro for all her hard work and enthusiasm in organizing this event.

Congratulations to Gavin Brown, the Sun News Leadership Award winner for Burgess Elementary School. Gavin was presented this award for making a positive difference in the school and the community. He chose Mrs. Krissy Larson as his most influential teacher because “she is fun and teaches us good information.” Gavin and Mrs. Larson were featured in November in The Sun News. Great job Gavin and Mrs. Larson!

Congratulations Jakob, 1st Place BES Spelling Bee Winner, and to Keyana, first runner up!      Congratulations to Jakob, our school spelling bee champion and to Keyana, our school runner-up. Jakob will represent Burgess Elementary School in The Sun News’ 20th Annual Regional Spelling Bee on March 11, 2008, at Myrtle Beach High School at 6:30 p.m. Twelve students from the fifth grade were selected to compete in the school bee based on their performances in class spelling bees. Class winners were: Carl Boles, Asheik Greene, Luis Pedroza, Marc Hyman, Haywood Brandon, Lauryn Woodson, Jakob Morse, Keyana Burris, Josh Deas, Dillon LeDuc, Gavin Brown, and Drake Martin.

Congratulations to Josh Barua, our school’s Lt. Governor’s Writing Awards Program winner. This program was developed in 1979 to improve writing and communication skills of SC fifth grade students. Josh’s essay will represent Burgess in the district competition. Special recognition also goes to the classroom winners: Haywood Brandon, Carmen Arias, Samantha Street, Keyanna Burris, Logan Thompson, Christopher Shearin, Andrew Howard, Marcus Ray Ramos, Elizabeth Mazzatenta, Drake Martin, and Gavin Brown.                  
The Grand Premier/Open House was a great success with over 1,000 students, parents, and community members in attendance.  The winner of the drawing was announced, carolers sang, refreshments were served, an interactive technology lab and sea turtle exhibit introduced the community to Burgess Elementary, the BEST!

Our Salvation Army canned food drive was a huge success with a total of 2,535 cans collected.  The blue team edged out the green team with 1,289 cans to win!

Congratulations, Jackie Chadick
The B.E.S.Teacher of the Year!

Jackie Chadick has been named Teacher of the Year for Burgess Elementary.  Ms. Chadick has been a teacher in Horry County for 7 years (teaching 1st and 2nd grade.)  She also taught in Georgetown for 2 years.  Ms. Chadick is a member of A-Team, Discipline Committee, Social Committee, Data Team/ Leadership Team, Grade Chairperson for 4 years, S.C. Content Area Team (Science), and Horry County Science Curriculum Work Team (First Grade).

Jackie has taken masters courses in Educational Administration and Elementary Education (USC and
Coastal Carolina.)  She has a degree in Elementary Education from State University New York College at
Oneonta and is Highly Qualified in Elem. Education and Early Childhood Education.

Student Tardies

We are having problems with student tardies. Please remember, your child must be in his/her classroom at 7:45 to be on time. All tardy students must be signed in by an adult  through the Burgess office. Thank you for helping us with this very  important matter.

Welcome to Horry County's newest elementary school.  We will start the 2007-2008 school year as a portable school on St. James Elementary campus and will move to our new facility before the new year!
