Substitute Teaching Information

Substitutes in Horry County Schools play an important role in assisting regular staff members with student learning.  We believe that all students can learn at high levels and that it is both our pleasure and our responsibility to teach them.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS TO SUBSTITUTE IN HORRY COUNTY SCHOOLS

 I.  Completed Application Packet sent/taken to the Coastal Workforce Center*

  • Application - completed Horry County Schools District application.                Application available for printing (click) (Adobe Acrobat Reader required)               (Resume may be attached; however, work history on the application must be totally
    completed, including the beginning and ending month/year for
    each experience).

    *Please note:  If an applicant is an out-of-state or out-of-county resident, the applicant may submit all of the required documentation to the attention of Hope King-Randall via fax # (843) 488-6904.*

  • Education – minimum of high school diploma and GED are acceptable.
    Correspondence schools are not acceptable.  Documented proof of Highest Level of Education, i.e., diploma or  official transcript with visible school/college name is required.  Internet documentation is not acceptable.
    Compensation is based on level of education.  (Click here for wage table).
  • Applicant Disclosure and Consent form - Allows Horry County Schools to do a criminal backgroud investigation.(click here for form) .
  • Negative TB Test Resultsmust be on a DHEC (Dept. of Health            and  Environmental Control) form (click here for form).  TB tests are administered
    by  the Conway Health Department (by appointment); area Urgent Care centers;
    or your personal physician.  The test requires 72 hours for final results.

 II.  Attend Horry County Schools Substitute Workshop.
(Instate or out-of state certified teachers are required to attend the workshop, but the three hour classroom observation is waived.  Please bring a copy of your valid certificate to the workshop.)

  • Location - All workshops are conducted at the Horry County Schools District Office Auditorium located at 1605 Horry Street in Conway.  Click here for directions to the District Office.  Each workshop begins at 8:30 a.m with one(1) hour for lunch and concludes around 4:00 p.m.  Please plan to arrive 10 to 20 minutes early for employment processing.  Workshop includes:
    A)      Student Learning Concepts
    B)      Classroom Management Concepts
    C)      Required Employment Forms

  •  Required Information for Employment Processing
     A)      Two forms of identification for Federal I-9 requirements.

     B)      Voided check for direct deposit processing. 
           
     Direct deposit is required.
     C)      Knowledge of personnel tax exemptions for completion of Federal W4 form.

     D)     Social Security card with current name for payroll set-up.

    Note:  Available Benefits - Substitutes are eligible only for the SC Retirement System and will be asked to accept or reject this benefit at the workshop. 

 III.  Observe in a classroom setting for a minimum of three (3) hours

        (Requirement includes anyone that hasn't been in a HCS classroom in the last nine  
        school 
months.)

  • Following the workshop, substitute applicants must complete a minimum of 3 hours observation in a school of their choice within the district. The 3-hour observation session must be completed within 2 weeks of the substitute workshop. This information is included in the Substitute Handbook, which applicants will receive at the training. Once an applicant completes all of the requirements, he/she becomes a candidate to substitute in Horry County Schools and will be contacted by the individual schools for employment. Employment will be based on the HCS student calendar.
  • Inclement Weather: In the event school is canceled, the workshop will also be canceled. If school is delayed, the workshop will also be delayed according to school scheduling.
