Creating an Enduring Partnership – Mentor a Child Be a part of the team to improve student achievement.
A mentor is a caring adult who is willing to make a commitment to a student in need of extra help. A mentor is a/an - good listener
- nonjudgmental friend
- role model
- resource
- motivator
- guide
- helper
- advocate
- sharer of information & experiences
What will I be asked to do? A mentor’s main role is to be a caring adult. How that is accomplished would be best decided by each individual mentor. Some of the things to choose from are: - serve as an academic tutor, act as a reading buddy, book buddy, or reading friend, serve as a homework helper,
- be a lunch buddy, be a penpal or e-mail pal,
- share a hobby.
How much time will I need? A mentor can give as much time as he/she chooses; however, a commitment of at least one hour per week is recommended. How long would I serve as a mentor for a child? Assignments would be made on an annual basis. A mentor and student may decide to continue the relationship longer. Key Ingredient For Mentors - FRIENDSHIP Like all friendships there must be caring, trust, acceptance, and respect. This friendship will develop once the mentor and student get to know and trust one another. For more information, call (843) 488-6736 or click here to email.
