As the leading voices for public schools, board members develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational, financial, and social issues impacting the entire community. Locally, the Horry County Board of Education provides the governing leadership for the state’s third largest school district of more than 37,000 students, the county’s largest employer of more than 5,000 employees, and an annual budget of nearly $500 million.
The men and women serving the Horry County Board of Education are Will Garland, Chairman; Dr. Paul Peterson, Vice-Chairman, District 5; Ronald Bessant, District 9; Joe DeFeo, District 3; Harvey Eisner, District 1; Bill Graham, District 8; MaryEllen Greene, District 2; Charles Hucks, District 11; Paul Hudson, District 7; Kay Loftus, District 4; Chris Shannon, District 10 and Pam Timms, District 6.
Board members MaryEllen Greene and Pam Timms were recently honored by the South Carolina School Boards Association for having served 10 years on the Horry County Board of Education. They were among 40 other school board members throughout the state to be recognized for 10 or 15 years of service. Among the state’s 632 school board members, only 30 percent have served 10 years or more. Both Greene and Timms were presented with a certificate and a lapel pin.
