July 18, 2007 Students from the Academy for Technology and Academics (ATA) participated in the 30th Annual Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) National Leadership Conference held in June and added to the school’s collection of national and state awards. Student Jeana Dunn, vice president of the school’s chapter, received the Outstanding HOSA Chapter award. Dunn also competed against 44 national members and was the only South Carolina student to receive a $500 National Consortium for Health Science Technology Scholarship. Earlier this year, Dunn received a $1,000 Barbara James Scholarship during the South Carolina HOSA Leadership Conference. Mike Brode and Jonathon Parker, South Carolina HOSA President and Parliamentarian, respectively, attended the National Leadership Conference for state officers. Both students were presenters at the state-level Education and Business Summit (EBS) held at Greenville in June. Their program addressed the integration of leadership and technology. At this same event, Ashley Campbell won the Technology Champion award and received a trophy and a $250 savings bond. Kathy Rowell, Health Educator for Horry County Fire Rescue, received the Carl Perkins Humanitarian Award during the summit for her contributions to career and technical education programs. Rowell provides first aid and fire safety for students in health science technology, culinary arts, and cosmetology programs and is an officer for the health science technology advisory board. Rowell will participate in the Region II awards program next year, which includes eight states and Puerto Rico. Janet Hodge, ATA health science technology instructor and state president for this division, nominated Rowell for the award. Other ATA students in attendance at the national conference were Kodey Floyd, Katelyn Morris, Dana Smith, Alecia Smith, Alicia Lamar, and Phylicia Livingston. |
