Horry County Schools honors 547 students for academic and artistic performance

Horry County Schools honored 547 students at the annual Scholars’ Awards Banquet. Students from throughout the county were recognized as South Carolina Junior Scholars, Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) Scholars, Johns Hopkins Center for Academically Talented Youth Scholars, Governor’s School Scholars, SAT Scholars, Palmetto Fellows, National Merit Achievement Scholars, as well as high school valedictorians and salutatorians.

Below is a list of scholars and a description of honors earned.

South Carolina Junior Scholars

The South Carolina Junior Scholars Program reflects the growing statewide effort to improve education in South Carolina and responds to the critical needs of students possessing unique abilities. The purpose of the program is to identify students with exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual abilities and to provide opportunities for these students that facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their individual interests, and promote their academic success. Students qualify as South Carolina Junior Scholars based on their performance on the PSAT in the eighth grade.

Duke Tip Scholars

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) in Durham, North Carolina, is a nonprofit educational organization established with the premise that the future of this nation depends upon the fullest development of our best intellectual resources. The objectives of the program are to identify the brightest among our youngsters at an early age, to facilitate the education of these students, to follow and nurture their talents through the critical middle and high school years, and to develop an effective research effort to help understand the nature of academically talented adolescents. Duke TIP Scholars are identified through their performance on the SAT or ACT in the seventh grade.

The Center for Academically Talented Youth of Johns Hopkins University offers high achieving students the opportunity to take the PLUS test (SAT).

Governor's School for Academics Scholars

Established in 1976, the Governor's School of South Carolina at the College of Charleston provides special academic opportunities at the college level for high school students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and intellectual potential.

Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities

The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities offers a variety of programs dedicated to pre-professional arts education for artistically talented students. The school builds on the students' concepts and successes, blending the arts, academics, and humanities into a comprehensive class.

Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Scholars

The purpose of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics provide for the education of the scientifically astute leaders vital to the development of the economy of the state. The flagship residential program offers the most academically able students of this state a learning environment that strengthens their ability to think critically, stimulates the joy of learning, and fosters the excitement of discovery through scientific research.

Palmetto Fellows

The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship recognizes academic excellence and achievement among South Carolina students through a $5,000 scholarship administered by the SC Commission on Higher Education. A Palmetto Fellow is a qualifying senior who attends participating South Carolina colleges or universities. As long as a Palmetto Fellow continues to meet eligibility requirements, the scholarship is renewable up to four years.

Participants in the National Merit Scholarship Program are determined by their performance on the PSAT during their junior year. Students named National Merit Semi-Finalists, Finalists, and National Achievement Scholars are among a select group of students across the nation who advanced to the final round of competition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. From the pool of National Merit Scholarship Finalists, an elite group of students is awarded National Merit Scholarships.
