Supreme Court denies hearing, local option sales tax is lost
February 27, 2007

The vote on the one-penny sales tax approved by last November to pay for school construction will not go into effect as planned for March. The South Carolina Supreme Court denied an appeal from the district to hear its case after the South Carolina Election Commission voided the vote following a protest by a Conway resident who claimed that an informational flyer available at the polls might have influenced voters.

What this means, in short, is that taxpayers will continue to pay taxes for debt service for school facilities. The next opportunity to place a sales tax on the ballot again will be November 2008. Doing so requires a favorable vote of the School Board.
