Horry County Schools’ most talented student band musicians will present a concert for the public on Friday, January 12, at Wheelwright Auditorium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, at 5:45 p.m. The Horry County Schools’ All-County Band is comprised of approximately 200 students selected from all district middle and high schools. Students in grades 7-8 comprise the junior band and will be directed by Edna Grace, Director of Bands at College Park Middle School in Ladson, South Carolina. Grace has one of the most respected middle school band programs in the state and has served the South Carolina Bandmasters Association in a variety of positions. The senior band is comprised of high school students and will be lead by Dr. Scott Tobias, Associate Director of Bands for Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Tobias, a former public school band director returns to South Carolina after conducting the Sumter High School Bands prior to his appointment to position with Appalachian State. In a whirlwind pair of rehearsal days on January 11 and 12, students will learn new selections and prepare for their public performance. The two bands will present an hour-long concert of music that they have never seen prior to their first rehearsal. The performance will air on the educational access cable channel HCS-TV 12 during the month of March along with the All-County Chorus and All-County Orchestra concerts to be held later this year. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call Bert Owen, Fine Arts Specialist, at 488-6742 or email at bowen@do.hcs.k12.sc.us. |
