September 21, 2006 Pat Pierce of Myrtle Beach Intermediate School has been named one of three elementary science teachers selected as a state finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. As a finalist, Pierce submitted an application and unedited videos of herself teaching students science standards to the National Science Foundation. By March 2007, Pierce will learn if she has been chosen to represent South Carolina for this national honor. State winners receive a citation signed by the President of the United States, an opportunity to join a dynamic network of Presidential Awardees, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and a paid trip for two to Washington, DC, to attend a week-long series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the nation's highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science. The Awards recognize highly qualified K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. Each year, the national program alternates between elementary and middle/high school teachers. Each state has two winners, one each for mathematics and science.
