Karmen Smith, a 10th grade student at North Myrtle Beach High School earned a Gold Seal of Excellence Award in the DECA/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (Fashion Institute) Fashion Promotion Plan competition, at DECA’s 2006 International Career Development Conference, in Dallas, Texas, April 29 – May 2. In the DECA/Fashion Institute event, Karmen and competitors from around the world were tested on their skill and proficiency in fashion promotion. Their skills were measured through a 10-page written project and a defense of the project to fashion-industry professionals – including faculty and staff from the Fashion Institute. To qualify for competition, at DECA’s International Career Development Conference, students must be a top winner in the South Carolina competition. Karmen qualified to compete in the DECA/Fashion Institute Promotion event by placing 1st in the South Carolina competition held in Charleston, SC February 25-26, 2006. DECA’s renowned Competitive Events Program uses role-play events, comprehensive tests, online simulations and written projects to evaluate the academic and job skills their members develop in their marketing education classes, workplace experiences and through the DECA activities. Both the education and business communities recognize these skill sets as essential for future success.
