March 7, 2006 Three art students from Kingston Elementary School -Skylar Byrd, Courtney Koepcke and Savannah Shortt, and five students from Aynor Middle School - Matthew Finch, Dexter Gore, Skylar Johnson, Layton Nobles and Corey Stevens, had artwork selected for the Picasso Project. Their art teachers are Tammy Holt and Tammy Price, respectively. The Picasso Project is a student arts competition to benefit Voices for South Carolina’s Children, an organization that works to ensure all children in our state achieve their full potential.
The works of The Picasso Project came from the finest and most promising art students in South Carolina. Over 400 students from all school districts submitted two-dimensional art projects, which were juried in six regional competitions and then exhibited in six regional shows. Following the regional shows, 80 regional winners will be displayed and auctioned at The Picasso Project inaugural gallery exhibition and silent auction on April 21, 2006. Of the regional winners, ten will receive a special judges award and will hang in the Columbia Museum of Art in the community gallery exhibit from March 18 - April 18. Proceeds from The Picasso Project will support Voices for South Carolina’s Children’s newest pre-k initiative - Kids Can’t Wait to Learn.
